Consequential to my promotion to serve in the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble – effective 2/1/2009, my tenure as Principal Flute of Oberlin Orchestra will finish on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at around 4:30 PM, after the last note of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in Walt Disney Hall, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

It has been over 6 months since I last wrote a xanga entry. During the past six months, I…
1. Went to Washington State for cousin’s wedding,
2. Went to Italy for a large part of my summer,
3. Assistant-conducted in Italy,
4. Learned a lot of and about operas,
5. Went back to HK for five weeks of summer,
6. Came back to Oberlin for my final year,
7. Started the graduate school search,
8. Learned a lot about the secret tricks of conducting, which is, ironically, “not conducting”,
9. Competed in the Oberlin Concerto Competition,
10. Won the Oberlin Concerto Competition. -

You’ve seen the excerpts, you’ve practiced them, you’ve got the whole part from the ensemble library, you’ve practiced the whole thing…
But you’ll never really know how difficult it actually is, until – and only until – you read it with the orchestra.
My first reading, thankfully, went pretty well.
I just need to, apparently, keep practicing…

Tomorrow is the second-cycle concert of Oberlin Orchestra for this semester, which, by now you’ve been told, that I’m playing Principal Flute.
Today, in the dress rehearsal, I experienced something that I haven’t experienced for so long: pure satisfaction of my own playing.
I hadn’t felt this good for quite a long time, and now that I think of it, I probably never have.
And now I need that to hold on for tomorrow night.

Apparently today is another bad day.
When things are not going according to your plan, you’d probably blame the world, hate everyone that you think have made things go wrong. I, on the other hand, am trying to look on the bright side, no matter how ridiculously wrong it has gone.
See, now it looks like I’ve just saved my dad a couple thousand US dollars.
Indeed, the world, perhaps, is not being fair to me, but the world is never fair to everyone. I’m just not lucky enough to be one of those.
Peace.
